Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stole the lights at the opening session of the GCC at Doha on Monday, not because of what he had to say, but by the mere virtue of his presence.
An Iranian President has never been invited to attend a GCC before, or to address it, even the moderates who were in power before Ahmadinejad and who had lowered tensions between their country and neighbouring Arab states to record lows.
But Ahmadinejad is very special because his tenure has elevated tensions to record highs, whether through his fiery speeches and often insulting comments or the actual physical role Iran is playing on several fronts, most of which are Arab such as Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine. As a matter of fact, these “cards” were not enough for Iran so they tried to develop working relations with many Muslim Brotherhood leaders in other countries, a hostile act against the internal security of several Arab states; to name two: Egypt and Jordan!
Ahmadinejad is special but he wasn’t invited because of that. He is there because Arabs collectively reject the principle of resorting to any means but dialogue in dealing with tensions; especially those most of the world “enjoy” with Iran today to the degree of hysterical laughter.
Ahmadinejad was invited to set an example for the historic rulers of the world in Europe and those who have been mismanaging the affairs of earth in the USA who have been pushing “solutions” of all types, starting with sanctions and all the way up to major military strikes including the possibility of nuking Iran to stop it from acquiring nukes. The invite is very timely for two reasons that made the presence of the controversial radical leader a necessity.

The First: After Syria’s participation at the Annapolis conference, despite the low level representation and the following comments by Ahmadinejad that Iran-Syria ties are at their best, Iran received a very important message: Syria puts its interests first and the main reason why it is hanging around in this tight alliance with Iran is because it has no other choice. As a matter of fact, just in case it would have lost an opportunity at Annapolis, Syria went without any guarantees that its plight with Israel would be addressed. This should have tipped Ahmadinejad on the importance of carrot in the vegetable world and what would happen if the carrot held by his enemies is bigger, juicier and promises nutrition even if on the long term.
It is likely that Hizbollah’s dogmatic religious affiliation would always keep it a primary ally of Iran and we know that Hizbollah’s current leader is not into biting on carrots, but Hamas would drop Iran the minute they are dealt a better card by anyone else, possibly including its supposed arch-enemy Israel!
Even the religious Shiite Iraqi movements that know Iran as the midwife that delivered them and the Nanny that gave them care until they could handle it on their own are closely cooperating with the USA because their interests and that of the future of Iraq dictate that. In today’s world of carrots, birth and upbringing  is history when one is looking towards the future!
Iran today needs acceptance in its region and own environment more so than ever. So Ahmadinejad dropped his heroic style statements and arrived in Doha with a carrot in each hand: If gulf states need water, we have it and are willing to supply it. Thirsty baby? Or are you concerned about previous statements on how Iran can set all region’s oil fields on fire if it is attacked by the USA? Let us sign a security pact and here is some water.
Obviously a security pact with the GCC would make it more difficult for the USA to attack Iran on count of lack of cooperation from a GCC country or another so may be he was waving the carrot, hoping to share it.
Ahmadinejad also used the opportunity to suggest an economic zone that would break US and European sanctions against Iran. Why not? Arab states officially reject the use of economic sanctions against countries after they saw how this weapon of mass devastation killed over a million innocent civilians in Iraq even before the invasion took place! They also understand that the more economic ties with Iran, the larger the pacifier that would keep the noise down, and Ahmadinejad still needs to deliver more on the economic front for his people than the noise scaring away the foreigners.

The Second: All 16 US Intelligence services came together and issued one report declaring in all honesty that Iran had stopped efforts to develop a nuclear weapon since 2003 and until the mid of 2007 without any indication that it restarted the program since then.
If this does not kill any plans to attack Iran before US President George Bush is out of the White House, nothing would. Israel that had invested a huge time and effort in pushing for an attack is freaking out and despite how ridiculous it is to defy the findings of all 16 American intelligence agencies, Defence Minister Ehud Barak immediately came out declaring that chances are Iran has restarted its program!
One can’t help but remember with disgust how the respectable Ex-US Secretary of State Collin Power (unknowingly) made a presentation of lies at the UN “proving” through satellite pictures and other supposed collected intelligence how Iraq still had weapons of mass destruction. After the invasion and occupation of Iraq it soon became clear that there were no such weapons and the presentation was a fabrication.
It is apparent that the US intelligence that was greatly harmed by the fiasco has had enough with paying a hefty price for working hard to support Israel’s perceived needs rather than find the truth and furnish it to decision makers and the public. Barak may as well have kept his mouth shut on this one. Sooner or later even the Americans will get fed up with Israel’s hawks and their costly self-serving agendas!
But none of this gets Iran off the hook because the only party that can do this is the Iranian leadership.
The carrots that could find a worthy bite are not the ones Ahmadinejad carried to Doha but the ones he can swing before the eyes of Europe and the USA. The lessons he should have learnt in the true meaning of political alliance (what Syria did) and the opportunity of the US Intelligence report that promises to deflate the drive for war and heavier sanctions should be grabbed now.
Or is there anything else on the mind of Ahmadinejad he would like to divulge on whether the holocaust happened or if there is such thing as gay in Iran?

Islamic Fascism declared war against the U.S. and all non-Islamic nations. The truth is the truth. Why would any free human want to suppress this? http://tinyurl.com/2znnvl
